Course Descriptions
Sea Skills I. Practice and learn skills that form the foundation of kayaking, "understanding the relationship between your actions and the reactions of the kayak". Perfect for novices, beginners, and more experienced paddlers that have never had kayak instruction. Safe capsize and recovery, control of the kayak while paddling forward, back, and sideways, balance, recovery of balance, assisted & Eskimo rescues, and much more. These fundamental skills are the foundation of more advanced paddling, and represent a set of skills adequate for taking a kayak out in calm waters close to shore. This course provides training in British Canoe Union 1 and 2 star closed cockpit kayak skills. All equipment provided, including dry suits.

Sea Skills II. The flat water skills. Includes understanding the relationship between your actions and the reactions of the kayak, and the technical performance of strokes and maneuvers, basic trip planning and navigation, assisted and Eskimo rescues, and towing. This is course emphasizes the technical performance of strokes and maneuvers and provides training in British Canoe Union closed cockpit kayak 3 star skills. These are pre-requisite skills to advanced sea kayak skills training (BCU 4 Star sea kayak), and for attending BCU Coach Training programs. All equipment provided, including dry suits.

Sea Kayak Design and Function. We'll do a show and tell to review safety and design features of modern sea kayaks: rudders, skegs, water proof compartments, deck lines, surf toggles, shapes and sizes, etc. Materials and construction: plastic and composite, and wood. Why use singles? What are the virtues of doubles? Learn "how" kayaks move through the water and discover what designs are best for your intended purpose: long distance touring, day-tripping, rock garden play, family outings, fishing, birding and photography, etc. Day: Saturday

Paddle Design and Function. We'll do a "show and tell" to review design and performance features of Euro and Greenland paddles. Materials (wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber, plastic) feathered vs. un-feathered, blade size and shape, shaft lengths, materials and designs: straight, modified and neutral cranks, short vs. long. Select a paddle best suited for your interests and intended uses and pocket book.

Wind and Waves - Open Water Skills: Increase your confidence and ability to paddle in open water conditions where wind and waves strongly affect your kayak. What is weather cocking? How do you counter act it? Where do wind and waves come from? Are they predictable? If your rudder breaks (yoicks!), how can you maneuver your kayak without it in the wind? We will practice surf landings and launchings if conditions allow. Navigation, group awareness, strokes, maneuvers, rescues and towing in conditions, All equipment provided, including dry suits. This is an excellent course for guides! Open water paddling skills, group dynamics, safety, rescues, and hopefully some surf!

Sea Kayak Navigation Workshop: Chart and compass skills and an introduction to trip planning. How long does it take to paddle across Kachemak Bay? How can you paddle in the dark? Rules of the road and a little more. Bring compass, paper, pencil and string. Hands on exercises.

Bracing and Rolling (2 evenings in the Homer Pool) - B&R I - balance and bracing ( Monday). Improve your kayaking balance and recovery skills in this intensive workshop on maintaining and regaining balance in a kayak. Low and high recoveries and Eskimo rescues. B&R II - Eskimo Rolling (Tuesday). Learn safe use of the body to regain your balance while Eskimo rolling, and develop practice drills to help you succeed in learning this cool kayaking safety skill. This is a great start to learning the Eskimo roll, the ultimate kayaking self-rescue for river and ocean paddling.

"The Crossing" Demystify crossing Kachemak Bay in a kayak. This open water tour is the reason you developed your kayaking skills - to achieve freedom from shore and become pelagic in a group. You will learn and practice open water group awareness, navigation and boat control on this trip across Kachemak Bay and back. Early departure - early return is the plan. Perfect for all Kayak School alumni of the Wind and Waves - Open Water course, Applied Sea skills or BCU 4 star sea training. This is a "weather permitting" only trip. We reserve the right to cancel or change the trip if weather is not suitable for the crossing. Comparable paddling will be substituted if the weather calls for it. All equipment provided, including dry suits.
