Course Descriptions
1. Kachemak Kayak Festival.
The finest week of kayaking Homer has to offer - the school
offers a used gear sale and a series of skills courses that
build in difficulty through the week. It’s a nice progression,
discover the possibilities ….
We begin the festival with beginner and intermediate skills
courses, (Skills I & II), Safety and Rescue and Introduction
to Sea Kayak Navigation, and end the 10 days with Wind and Waves
and Tides and Currents courses/trips. Lots of other activities
such a kayak film festival, kayaker fashion show, keynote speaker
and author Chris Duff, kids programs, door prizes, gear swap,
used gear sale (kayak school), kayak and skill demos, and all

2. Sea Kayak
Safety and Rescue. 9 AM - 5 PM. Learn about safety
and design features of clothing, PFDs, paddles, & kayaks.
Learn about signaling equipment, hypothermia prevention and
clothing, group awareness, clean wet exit, swim with your
kayak, cowboy scramble, t-rescue, x-rescue, Eskimo rescue,
on the water first aid, on the water boat repair. Beginner
to Advanced paddlers. All equipment provided, including Kokatat

3. Sea Kayak Navigation Workshop.
7-9 PM. Introduction to sea kayak navigation. Practice and
learn basic chart and compass skills, and plan a kayak day
trip. Hands on learning. Students should bring compass, map
or chart of Kachemak Bay, 12" piece of string, pencil
and ruler. Practice laying a course, estimating time and distance,
identifying of marine hazards and escape routes. Learn about
tides, currents and marine weather for your trip planning.

4. Wind and Waves.
Controlling your kayak in conditions. 9 AM - 5 PM. Increase
your confidence and ability to paddle in open water conditions
where wind and waves strongly affect your kayak. What is weather
cocking? How do you counter act it? Where do wind and waves
come from? Are they predictable? If your rudder breaks (yoicks!),
how can you maneuver your kayak without it in the wind? We
will practice surf landings and launchings if conditions allow.
All equipment provided, including Kokatat Gore-tex dry suits.

5. Tides and Currents.
Halibut Cove Lagoon. 9 AM-5 PM What are the differences between
tides and currents? What are tidal streams? Tidal Races? Overfalls?
Increase your confidence and ability to paddle in tidal channels,
tidal races, and overfalls where the speed of the current
is faster than you can paddle! Practice wet exits and rescues,
and learn to make "whitewater" moves in a sea kayak:
eddy-turns, peel outs, ferries, etc. Great place to put your

6. Tides and Currents.

7. Test Drive - Demo Event: 9 AM-5
PM. Test a wide array of modern kayaks in the controlled environment
of the Barge Basin with support from experienced kayakers
and instructors. Dress in layered insulating clothing, synthetics
best, with a waterproof outer layer, such as a rain jacket.
You will receive a safety orientation before launching. Contact:

No advance arrangements necessary, must sign waiver and wear
protective clothing and Personal Flotation Device.
8. Skills and Rescue Demonstration
11 AM-12 PM. Come watch local kayak coaches and instructors
maneuvering sea kayaks, demonstrating strokes, maneuvers,
preventing capsizes, recovery strokes, Eskimo rolls to regain
balance, and efficient assisted and self-rescues.

9. Sea Skills I, Introduction:
1-5 PM. - Learn and practice sea kayaking basics in an afternoon
of games, drills, races and instruction. Safe carrying and
lifting, launching and landing, safe capsize and wet exit,
balance, propulsion, stopping, turning, hypothermia and clothing,
group awareness, kayak, paddle, and more. Novice to Intermediate

10. Kayak Test Drive

1-5 PM. Reinforce sea kayaking basics (sea skills I) and
improve the efficiency of your strokes, maneuvers and rescues

effective rescues, and towing. Great follow-up course to Sea

12 / 13. Passage
Canal Sea School - beginner/intermediate Sea Kayaking
skills - Whittier. Develop open water paddling skills during
this 2-day course in beautiful Passage Canal. First day devoted
to general boat control, safety, clothing, rescues, and group
awareness. Put it all together on a day trip on the second
day. Trip planning, safe carrying, launching and landing,
clothing and essential gear, effective strokes and maneuvers,
safety equipment and procedures, rescues, towing, ocean play,
navigation, and more. Pre-requisites: previous sea kayaking
experience and confident wet exit desirable, but not essential.

15. Sea Skills I
& II: 9 AM-5 PM. Learn and practice the basics
of sea kayaking in a day of drills, games, competitions and

17. Wind and Waves - Rock Gardens.
Put the whitewater in your sea kayaking bag of tricks. Practice
maneuvering your kayak in flat water in the morning and take
your new skills on an exploration of some of Kachemak Bay's
loveliest sites, the rocky shorelines of the south side of
the bay. Practice strokes, maneuvers, and improve your rescue
skills and safety awareness. Great fun (all plastic sea kayak
fleet) and exciting too! All equipment provided.

18. Kachemak Bay Sea School -
beginner/intermediate Sea Kayaking skills - 3 Days @ Otter
Cove Resort, Tutka Bay. Spend a long weekend developing the
full repertoire of skills you'll need to safely paddle sea
kayaks as member of a group in placid to moderate conditions.
Trip planning, safe carrying, launching and landing, group
awareness, clothing and essential gear, effective strokes
and maneuvers, safety equipment and procedures, rescues, towing,
ocean play, navigation, and more. Includes water taxi, 2 dinners,
3 lunches, 2 breakfasts, 2 nights lodging in 4-person cabins,
and all kayaking instruction and equipment (including dry
suit). Depart Homer Harbor for Tutka Bay 10 AM of day 1. Expect
first afternoon orientation and short paddle, and all-day
session on second and third days. Water taxi departure back
to Homer around 5:30 PM of day 3. You bring personal clothing,
sleeping bag and other personal items. Pre-requisites: previous
sea kayaking experience and confident wet exit desirable,
but not essential.

19. Introduction to River Kayaking
- Safety, equipment, signaling, flatwater practice and a short
river run to practice paddling in current. Ferries, eddy turns,
spins, rescues, safe swimming, and a little play boating make
this an easy introduction to this fantastic sport. Great course
for most Alaska Kayak School graduates interested in learning
river kayaking!

20. Woz River Trip: Woz
Glacier to Kachemak Bay - Be one of a few to have paddled
the Woz River in Kachemak Bay State Park, a lovely class I-II
bouncy and very scenic wilderness run is a very short flight
across Kachemak Bay from Homer. Braided in places, several
chutes and wave trains carry you down to rocky walls and several
tight corners, sweepers and log jams in places require easy
portages. Great Fun! We fly from Beluga Lake and land and
launch into the glacial lake under the Woz Glacier. Spend
a day practicing river paddling moves while winding down to
Neptune Bay beach on the shores of Kachemak Bay. This is just
about due south of Lands End on the Homer Spit. This is the
reason you learned to kayak! Join the fun!!!
