830-1000 PM weeknights

 

I. Introduction - Kayaking Skills for Sea Kayakers - 2 sections, a) on Tuesday 830-1000 PM and b) on Monday 830-1000 PM. This course is appropriate for paddlers of all experience levels that have had little or no instruction. Focus is on basic skills that form the basis for more advanced skills taught in the Intermediate Course.

II. Intermediate - Kayaking Skills for Sea Kayakers - Thursday 830-1000 PM. Focus on getting total control of the kayak with crisp performance of strokes and maneuvers, including Eskimo rolling.

 The Intro and Intermediate courses use maneuverable river kayaks to teach transferable kayaking skills: safety, fun, strokes, maneuvers, balance and more in ten 1.5 hr. pool sessions (15 hours total) from 13 October to 18 December. Classes for novice and beginners as well as experienced paddlers. We use the useful skill progressions in the British Canoe Union closed cockpit kayak syllabi. All instructors are professionally trained kayak coaches. All equipment is provided (kayak, paddle, skirt, and helmet). Come join the fun, youngsters 12 and up encouraged to attend, alone of with a parent.

 Registration

1)      Get a Community Schools catalog or go to the Community Schools office (@ Homer High School) and register for the course by filling out a Comm Schools course registration form and waiver, and paying the $15 Community Schools registration fee.

2)      Bring a check for the course fee payable to Alaska Kayak School to the first class the week of October 13 - 17, 2003. You just need your swimsuit!!! And towel. Eyaglass retainers are suggested for people with glasses

 I.  KAYAKING SKILLS FOR SEA KAYAKERS: Introduction #1

Learn kayaking or hone your skills! Learn and hone novice and beginner kayaking skills and other essentials for safe kayaking during ten 1.5-2  hr. pool sessions. Developing effective paddling skills will give you confidence and an awareness of safety. Learn a wide array of effective strokes, maneuvers and safety techniques. Course is appropriate for novices (never been in a kayak) or paddlers that have had no formal instruction and want to learn the basics: fun, safety, balance, torso for power, and confident wet exits and rescues.. Paddlers over 12 years of age (w/ parental approval). All equipment provided. Limit of 10 students, minimum of 7.

 III. KAYAKING SKILLS FOR SEA KAYAKERS - Intermediate

T. Pogson, L. Pomeroy, and S. Dickerson
 Learn and practice intermediate kayaking skills (British Canoe Union 3 star) that permit technical performance of all kayaking strokes and maneuvers, efficient rescues, and Eskimo rolling. This 10 week course is a sequel for Kayaking Skills for Sea Kayakers:101-103 or anyone with British Canoe Union 2 star or equivalent kayaking skills. Consolidate your skills and build on that solid foundation. Limit of 10 students, 7 student minimum. Pre-requisites: KSSK: Intro, or permission of the instructors.  All equipment provided.
